Tesla Defies Strikes and Increases its Market Share in Sweden

Despite ongoing strikes and attempts by union IF Metall to block deliveries of Tesla cars, statistics show that Tesla continues to gain ground in the Swedish electric car market during February. Specifically, Tesla's compact SUV, the Model Y, has emerged as the most popular electric car in Sweden and the second most sold car across all categories that month.

Since the strike began on October 27 last year, Tesla's sales in Sweden have proved resilient. In fact, the brand's market share has increased to 20.3 percent in February from previous months in the fall of 2023, according to the latest sales statistics from Mobility Sweden. These statistics place the Tesla Model Y at the top of electric car sales and as a strong competitor against other car brands, including the Volvo XC60.

To get a more balanced view of Tesla's sales development, an analysis based on a rolling three-month average has been performed. This shows that Tesla has maintained an average market share of 16.3 percent of the electric car market in the period from February 2023 to February 2024. Despite a drop to around 12 percent in November, after the start of the strike, the share has again risen to over 16 percent.

Despite strike action and sympathy measures by other unions aimed at limiting Tesla's deliveries and service work, the company has managed to maintain relatively short delivery times for new cars. A report by Aftonbladet exposing Tesla's use of child labor in Madagascar has also not significantly affected consumer confidence, underscoring Tesla's continued popularity.
