Start the low-voltage battery with jumper cables

The following instructions assume that you are using a low-voltage external power supply (for example, a jump starter). If you jump start Model S using another vehicle, follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

Caution: Model S cannot be used to jump start another vehicle. It may cause injury.

Caution: Avoid short circuits when jump starting Model S. Connecting the wires to the wrong terminals, allowing the wires to touch, etc. can damage Model S.

Follow these steps:

  • Open the hood.
  • Remove the maintenance panel by pulling it upwards to release the clips in the trim that hold it in place.
  • At the top of the low voltage battery, lift the locking tab that secures the electrical connection to the connector housing.

Note: The appearance of the electrical connection and the connector housing may vary, but the procedure is the same.

  • At the top of the low voltage battery, pull off the connector cover to the left. The electrical connection is released from the low voltage battery.
  • Release the cover from the red positive (+) terminal, and then connect the red positive (+) cable of the low voltage power supply to the red positive (+) terminal.

Caution: To avoid damage to Model S, do not allow the positive cable to come into contact with other metal components.

Note: Depending on the date of manufacture, the cover and location of the red positive (+) starter terminal may differ slightly.

  • Connect the low voltage power source black negative (-) wire to the vehicle at the location shown.
  • Turn on the external power supply (see manufacturer's instructions for details). Tap the touchscreen to wake it up.

Note: It may take several minutes to get enough power to wake up the touchscreen.

  • When you no longer need the external low voltage power, disconnect both cables. Start with the black negative (-) cable.
  • At the top of the low voltage battery, slide the connector cover towards the electrical connection so that it activates the low voltage battery.
  • At the top of the low-voltage battery, push down the locking tab that secures the electrical connector to the connector housing.
  • Replace the maintenance panel by placing it in its original position and pushing down until it is firmly seated.
  • Close the engine cover.
