Jump Start the Low Voltage Battery

The following instructions assume you are using an external low voltage power supply (such as a jump starter). If you are jump-starting Model X using another vehicle, follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

Caution: Model X cannot be used to jump-start another vehicle. This may cause damage.

Caution: Avoid short circuits when jump-starting Model X. Connecting the cables to the wrong poles or allowing the leads to touch each other can damage Model X.

Follow these steps:

  • Open the hood.
  • Remove the maintenance panel by pulling it upward to release the clips holding it in place.
  • At the top of the low voltage battery, lift the locking tab that secures the electrical connection to the connector housing.

Note: The appearance of the electrical connection and connector housing may vary, but the procedure is the same.

  • At the top of the low voltage battery, pull the connector housing to the left. The electrical connection is released from the low voltage battery.
  • Place a dry cloth over the metal braces around the positive (+) pole contact. The pole contact is located underneath the wiper motor and the white, rectangular fluid reservoir.
  • Reach around and under the wiper motor to remove the cover from the red positive (+) pole and then connect the red positive (+) cable from the low voltage power supply to the red positive (+) terminal.

Caution: Avoid damage to Model X by ensuring the positive cable does not contact any other metal components.

Note: Depending on the manufacturing date, the cover and location of the red positive (+) jump post may vary slightly.

  • Connect the black negative (-) cable from the low voltage power source to the vehicle at the designated location.
  • Turn on the external power supply (refer to the manufacturer’s instructions). Tap the touchscreen to wake it.

Note: It may take several minutes to have enough power to wake the touchscreen.

  • When you no longer need the external low voltage power, disconnect both cables, starting with the black negative (-) cable.
  • At the top of the low voltage battery, slide the connector housing toward the electrical connection to activate the low voltage battery.
  • At the top of the low voltage battery, press down the locking tab that secures the electrical connection to the connector housing.
  • Reinstall the maintenance panel by placing it back in its original position and pressing down until it is securely in place.
  • Close the hood.
