Manually Releasing the Charging Cable

If the usual methods to release the charging cable from the charge port (using the button on the charge handle, touchscreen, or mobile app) do not work, you can try holding down the button for the rear trunk on the key fob (if applicable) for 1-2 seconds. Follow these steps carefully if the cable still does not release:

  • Check that Model X is not actively charging by viewing the charging screen on the touchscreen. If necessary, tap Stop Charging.
  • Open the rear trunk.
  • Pull the charge cable release cable downward to release the charging cable.

Warning: Do not pull the release cable while trying to remove the charging cable from the charge port. Always pull the release cable before attempting to remove the charging cable. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock and serious injury.

Note: The release cable may be recessed in the opening in the trim.

  • Pull the charging cable out of the charge port.

Caution: Only use the release cable in situations where you are unable to remove the charging cable from the charge port using the standard methods. Repeated use may damage the release cable or charging equipment.

Warning: Do not perform this procedure while the vehicle is charging or if any orange high-voltage cables are exposed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in electric shock, serious injury, and vehicle damage. If you are unsure how to safely perform this procedure, contact your nearest Service Center.
