Install the front license plate bracket

To comply with jurisdictions that require the vehicle to have a front license plate, Model Y has a license plate bracket. The mount is customized to the shape of the front bumper and is secured with strong adhesive.

Note: Tesla recommends installing when the vehicle is dry and clean and on a warm day. Cold or wet conditions may cause the adhesive to not adhere properly.

Install the front license plate bracket:

  • Test the isopropyl alcohol on a painted surface that is not visible to ensure that it does not damage or remove the paint.
  • Clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry for at least one minute.
  • Remove the protective tape from the glued surface on the top of the bracket and partially remove the tape from the top of the glued surface on each side. Leave the bottom half of the tape on the sides and fold the loose tape outwards so that you can easily remove the tape after aligning the bracket with the bumper.
  • Tilt the upper part of the license plate bracket away from the bumper (to avoid getting it stuck in the wrong place) and align the lower middle part of the bracket with the center of the grill as shown in the picture.

Anm: Be as careful as possible when aligning the bracket because you won't be able to move it once it's attached to the bumper.

  • After aligning the bracket, bring the top of the bracket to the bumper and press it down so that the glue sticks.
  • Remove the remaining pieces of tape from the sides of the bracket, and then press the entire bracket to the bumper. Make sure the bracket is firmly attached to all glued surfaces.
  • Once the bracket is firmly attached, screw the license plate to the bracket using the four screws provided (tighten to 3 Nm/2.2 ft-lbs).
