Replacing the HEPA filters
Tesla recommends replacing the HEPA filters, if so equipped, after 3 years (every year in China).
Disassembly:
- Open the bonnet:
- Remove the car's skid plate from under the hood by inserting a small flat, non-scratching tool, or your fingers, under the panel. Pull up on the clamps to release them and set the under-hood cover aside.
- Remove the screw that secures the washer fluid reservoir fitting to the under-hood storage unit using a 10 mm socket wrench.
- Remove the washer fluid reservoir coupler from the vehicle. If the washer fluid reservoir is full, some washer fluid may leak out.
Note: You do not need to remove the hose from the connector.
- Remove the screws (x2) that secure the HEPA filter assembly to the vehicle with a 10 mm socket wrench.
- Carefully remove the HEPA filter assembly from the vehicle by tilting the rear edge of the filter assembly upward past the brake fluid reservoir and lifting the filter out of the vehicle, making sure it does not strike or damage other components.
- Remove the screws (x10) that secure the cabin filter cover to the HEPA filter assembly with a T20 torx chisel, then remove the cover from the assembly.
- Remove the old carbon filters from the filter housing.
- Remove the old HEPA filters from the HEPA filter housing by gently prying the rubber gasket so that the filter comes loose along the gasket.
Assembly:
- Insert the new HEPA filters into the HEPA filter assembly. Bend out the housing to check that the seal connects completely around the filters.
- Insert the new carbon filters into the filter unit, with the arrows on the filters pointing towards you.
- Use a T20 torx screwdriver to replace the screws (x10) that secure the HEPA filter cover to the HEPA filter assembly. Tighten to a torque of 1.6 Nm.
Caution: Be careful not to overtighten the screws. Doing so may cause damage.
- Maneuver the HEPA filter into place, making sure it does not touch or damage other components.
- Tighten the screws (x2) with a 10 mm socket wrench. Tighten them to a torque of 10 Nm (7.4 ft-lb).
- Check that the O-ring on the washer fluid reservoir coupling is fully seated, and then install the washer fluid reservoir coupling by inserting it into the washer fluid reservoir.
- Pull the hose so that it is held by the tabs (x3) that connect it to the washer fluid reservoir coupling.
- Install the pressure clip that secures the neck of the washer fluid reservoir to the under-hood storage unit.
- Replace the under-hood cover by aligning the clips with their slots in the front trunk. Press down to lock them in place. The clips make a clicking sound when they lock into place.
- Close the hood.
