Model S 2012-2020 - Opening the hood without power
Tesla Model S 2012-2020 - Exterior Components
Open the hood without power
This procedure is intended for Model S vehicles built before April 2016 that are equipped with a nose cone attached to the front bumper.
Anm: The mechanical opening lever, described below, is not available for all versions of Model S. For all-wheel drive vehicles and some newer models, contact Tesla for assistance.
If Model S has no power, or if you cannot open the front trunk with the touchscreen or key, you can pull the mechanical release lever located under the glove box if you are in the vehicle. This will open the primary latch.
Next, push down the secondary latch lever and open the front hood. You may need to push the front cover down slightly to reduce the pressure on the secondary latch.
Note: The mechanical opening lever, described below, is not available for all versions of Model S. Some models are equipped with the positive (+) and negative (-) poles just behind the nose cone so that you do not need to open the hood to connect the jump starter. For vehicles with all-wheel drive and some newer models, contact Tesla for assistance.
If you are outside the vehicle and cannot get in or the release mechanism does not work as expected:
- Use the plastic pry tool located in the top right corner to pry the nosecone toward you. Be careful not to damage the parking sensor cable connected to the back of the nose cone.
- To disconnect the parking sensor cable, press down on the tab of the clip. Then pull to release.
- Pull the primary release lever located on the left side of the front center of the hood.
Note: On some vehicles, the positive (+) and negative (-) poles are just behind the nose cone so you don't have to open the front trunk.
- Release the secondary release lever located in the front of the bonnet to the right and open the bonnet by pushing it.
