Charging Port Status Light

When the charging port is open, the status light changes color to indicate the current status. The purpose is to assist in troubleshooting if an issue arises. The charging port light turns off as a reminder after a short time if the vehicle is locked (e.g., if you approach the car after it has been charging for a while).

Note: When you connect your vehicle, make a habit of checking the charging port light's color before leaving the vehicle. If the light is red or yellow, you can address the issue immediately and ensure proper charging.

  • WHITE – STEADY (normal operation)

What it means: Model S is ready for charging, and the connector is not plugged in, or the charging port lock is unlocked, and the connector can be removed.

What to do: Insert the connector if you want to charge or remove it if charging is complete.

  • BLUE – FLASHING (normal operation)

What it means: Model S is communicating with the charging station.

What to do: Nothing. Wait a few seconds until the charging port starts flashing green (charging) or turns solid blue (a scheduled charge is set).

  • BLUE – STEADY (action may be required)

What it means: Model S recognizes that a connector is plugged in, and a scheduled charge is set to begin at a specific time. Charging is not active.

What to do: If you want to charge immediately, deactivate Scheduled Charging or press Start Charging on the touchscreen or in your mobile app. If you want to use scheduled charging, do nothing. Remember, scheduled charging saves your location.

  • GREEN – FLASHING (normal operation)

What it means: Charging is in progress. The more charged Model S is, the slower the light flashes.

What to do: Nothing. Remove the charging cable when charging is complete.

  • GREEN – STEADY (normal operation)

What it means: Charging is complete.

What to do: Remove the charging cable when you're ready to drive.

  • YELLOW – STEADY (action required)

What it means: The connector is not fully plugged into the charging port.

What to do: Re-align the connector to the charging port and push it in fully. If the issue persists, check for obstructions preventing the connector from plugging in. If no issues are found, try a different charging cable.

  • YELLOW – FLASHING (action required)

What it means: Model S is charging at a reduced current because the connector is not fully plugged in.

What to do: Re-align the connector to the charging port and push it in fully. If the issue persists, check for obstructions preventing the connector from plugging in. If no issues are found, try a different charging cable.

  • RED – STEADY (action required)

What it means: A fault has been detected, and charging has stopped or cannot begin.

What to do: Check the dashboard or touchscreen for an error message. If no issue is found, try another charging cable or reset the power source (if applicable, check the status light on the mobile connector or wall unit). If switching cables doesn't help, power cycle the vehicle using the touchscreen and try again.

  • NO LIGHT (normal operation)

What it means: Model S is locked and has been off for a while.

What to do: Nothing. The charging port status light will turn on if the vehicle is unlocked or the button on the charging handle is pressed.
