Replacing the hood gas springs

Note: When replacing a gas spring pair, take one at a time. Do not remove both gas springs at the same time in case the temporary support breaks or stops working.

If the hood gas springs do not work for any reason, they can be replaced. To replace the hood gas springs:

  1. Open the hood and use a temporary, non-abrasive support to hold it open.
  2. Release the protective plate under the rear hood.
  3. Use a pry tool to loosen the lower clamp of the gas spring and pull the gas spring out of the mount in the vehicle body.
  4. Use a pry tool to loosen the upper clamp of the gas spring and pull the gas spring out of the bracket in the hood. Remove the old gas spring from the vehicle.
  5. Clean the attachment points on the vehicle and lubricate both attachment points of the new gas spring.
  6. Attach the gas spring piston end to the vehicle body and the cylinder end to the hood. Ensure that the clamps are fitted correctly.
  7. Remove the temporary support and check that the hood opens and closes correctly.
