Volvo Overtakes Tesla as Sweden's Most Popular Car

Tesla Model Y has lost its position as Sweden's most popular car model. In May 2024, the Volvo XC60 has become the most registered car model in Sweden. Volvo has also overtaken Tesla as the largest electric car brand in the country.
Last year, the Tesla Model Y became Sweden's best-selling car model, which was a historic shift as Tesla managed to knock the Volvo XC40 off the top spot. Since the 1960s, Volvo has almost constantly held the position as Sweden's most popular car model, which made Tesla's success last year particularly remarkable.
Now Volvo has taken revenge. In May, the Volvo XC60 has overtaken the Tesla Model Y to become Sweden's most newly registered car model, according to new figures from Car.info. So far this year, 5,663 Volvo XC60s have been registered, while the Tesla Model Y stands at 5,067 registered cars. The decline for Tesla is symptomatic of the car market, as electric cars have lost 21 per cent of their new registrations this year, while plug-in hybrids like the Volvo XC60 have held their ground. The trend of declining new registrations for electric cars in Sweden continues in May.
The Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid is thus Sweden's most popular car so far in 2024. Volvo has also overtaken Tesla as the largest electric car brand in Sweden, thanks to the new EX30 electric car, which has been registered almost as many times as the Tesla Model Y so far in May. However, Tesla tends to increase its deliveries at the end of the months, so there is a possibility that they will regain the top position from Volvo already in May. Meanwhile, Seko is now trying to stop all deliveries of licence plates due to the strike.
