Tesla FSD - The future of self-driving cars

Tesla Model Y FSD

Tesla is at the forefront of the electrification of the automotive industry, and their investment in self-driving technology is just as revolutionary. With Full Self-Driving, Tesla takes the next step towards fully autonomous driving.

What is FSD?

FSD stands for Full Self-Driving and is Tesla's most advanced software package for self-driving functions. It is based on the car's cameras, sensors and its own supercomputer Tesla Dojo, which together can interpret traffic situations and make decisions in real time. With FSD, your Tesla can, among other things:

  • Automatically navigate highways, including lane changes and exits
  • Recognize traffic lights and stop signs
  • Park automatically
  • Call the car so that it drives itself to you (Summon)
  • Driving in city traffic (beta feature in some countries)

The difference between Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot and FSD

It is easy to confuse the different systems. This is how they differ:

  • Autopilot - standard in all Teslas, includes adaptive cruise control and lane keeping
  • Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) - more advanced features such as Navigate on Autopilot, autopark and Summon
  • FSD - all EAP functions + advanced city driving, traffic light recognition and continuous updates towards full self-driving

Is FSD completely self-driving today?

Despite the name, FSD is not yet fully autonomous. The driver must still have his hands on the wheel and pay attention. The system is rated as level 2 on the self-driving scale, and Tesla is working towards level 4-5 where the car can drive completely on its own.

Price and availability

In Sweden, FSD as an option costs around SEK 75,000, but the price can vary over time. Tesla also offers a subscription in some markets, which makes it possible to try FSD without buying the feature outright.

The future of FSD

Tesla is constantly improving FSD through OTA (Over-The-Air) updates. The more Tesla cars on the road, the more data is collected, making the system smarter and more reliable over time. Elon Musk has said several times that FSD is a key to the robot taxi network of the future, where cars can drive passengers all by themselves. Tesla FSD is a glimpse of future mobility!
