Tesla Model Y - Low voltage battery
Replacement of the Low Voltage Lead-Acid Battery
Caution:It is your responsibility to monitor the health of the low voltage battery. Damage to the low voltage battery due to depletion is not covered by the warranty.
Caution:You should replace your low voltage lead-acid battery with the same type of battery to avoid damages not covered by the warranty. The low voltage lead-acid battery for North American vehicles is AtlasBX/Hankook 85B24LS 12V 45Ah. You can purchase a new low voltage lead-acid battery that is compatible with your vehicle from your local service center.
Perform the following procedure to replace the low voltage lead-acid battery. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses, leather gloves when handling the lead-acid battery, etc.).
Removal:
Prepare the vehicle for the removal of the low voltage lead-acid battery:
- Ensure that the vehicle is in parking mode.
- Lower all windows.
- Open the front trunk.
- Leave a door open so that you can re-enter the vehicle if necessary.
- Disconnect the charging cable from the charging socket.
- In the front trunk, remove the vehicle's protective plate under the hood by inserting a small flat tool or your fingers under the panel. Lift the clips to loosen them and set aside the protective plate under the hood.
Remove the HEPA filter if equipped:
- Remove the screw that secures the coupling on the washer fluid reservoir to the storage unit under the hood with a 10 mm socket wrench.
- Remove the washer fluid reservoir's coupling from the vehicle. If the washer fluid reservoir is full, it may leak a little washer fluid.
Note: You do not need to remove the hose from the coupling.
- Remove the screws (x2) that secure the HEPA filter unit to the vehicle with a 10 mm socket wrench.
- Remove the HEPA filter unit from the vehicle by tilting the rear edge of the filter unit upward past the brake fluid reservoir. Lift the filter out of the vehicle, ensuring it does not bump into or damage other components.
- Turn off the vehicle by going to Controls > Safety > Turn off on the touchscreen.
- Loosen the nut that secures the negative (-) terminal clamp to the negative (-) terminal on the lead-acid battery with a 10 mm socket wrench. Loosen the clamp from the negative (-) terminal.
- Disconnect the emergency loop by sliding the red locking tab towards you and pressing the black tab.
- Remove the terminal cover with a 10 mm socket wrench and loosen the nut that secures the positive (+) terminal clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the lead-acid battery. Loosen the clamp from the positive (+) terminal and cover the terminal clamp with a dry cloth.
Caution: Do not allow the positive (+) terminal clamp to come into contact with nearby components, such as the lead-acid battery holder or air conditioning coolant lines.
- Disconnect the vent tube from the negative (−) terminal side on the lead-acid battery.
- Loosen the nut on the battery holder on top of the lead-acid battery with a 10 mm socket wrench. Release the battery holder by loosening and pulling back the strap. If necessary, tilt the battery holder backward so that it does not slide into the vehicle.
- Use the battery handle to carefully remove the lead-acid battery, ensuring not to touch or damage the surrounding components.
Warning: When lifting the low voltage lead-acid battery, stand in front of the vehicle and use the correct lifting technique. The low voltage lead-acid battery weighs about 12 kg. Otherwise, there is a risk of serious personal injury.
- Check that the new lead-acid battery has a red contact in the casing on the positive (+) terminal side. If the new lead-acid battery does not have a red contact, use a removal tool to move the red contact from the old battery to the new one.
Caution: Dispose of the old lead-acid battery in accordance with local laws, such as by taking it to a battery recycling facility. Keep the lead-acid battery upright and place it on a towel or cardboard when transporting it.
Assembly:
- Carefully insert the new lead-acid battery into place and ensure it does not touch or damage nearby components.
- Mount the lead-acid battery holder and use a 10 mm socket wrench to tighten the nut that secures it to the battery. Tighten the nut to a torque of 6 Nm.
- Reconnect the emergency loop.
- Remove the covers from the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the new low voltage lead-acid battery.
- Connect the positive (+) pole by placing the clamp over the positive (+) contact. Use a 10 mm socket wrench and tighten the nut to a torque of 6 Nm.
- Mount the cover for the positive (+) pole.
- Connect the negative (-) pole by placing the clamp over the negative (-) contact. Use a 10 mm socket wrench and tighten the nut to a torque of 6 Nm.
- Connect the vent tube to the negative (-) terminal side on the lead-acid battery.
- Open one of the vehicle's doors to ensure that power is correctly reset and that the touchscreen turns on (this may take several minutes).
Install the HEPA filter if equipped:
- Carefully insert the HEPA filter and ensure that it does not touch or damage other components.
- Tighten the screws (x2) with a 10 mm socket wrench and tighten them to a torque of 5 Nm.
- Ensure that the O-ring on the washer fluid reservoir coupling is fully in place and then mount the washer fluid reservoir coupling by inserting it into the washer fluid reservoir.
- Pull the hose so that it is held by the tab.
- Remove the screw securing the neck of the washer fluid reservoir to the storage unit under the hood with a 10 mm socket wrench. Tighten the screw to a torque of 5 Nm.
- Replace the protective plate under the hood by aligning the clips in their openings in the front trunk. Press down to lock them in place. The clips make a clicking sound when they are locked in place.
- Close the front trunk. If a warning about replacing the lead-acid battery previously appeared on the touchscreen, check that the warning no longer appears.
