Troubleshooting Bluetooth

The vehicle uses Bluetooth and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to seamlessly connect your mobile phone to Model X. Occasionally, Bluetooth or BLE may disconnect, or pairing issues may arise due to various potential factors. With Bluetooth connection, your vehicle can use phone features such as audio, calls, calendar, and messages.

BLE is not used for passive features like phone keys.

Note: Do not disconnect the vehicle from the phone or remove the phone key without a functioning key card nearby.

Try the following steps to troubleshoot Bluetooth. Start with your mobile phone.

Troubleshooting the Mobile Phone

Bluetooth may fail to connect due to settings and updates on your mobile phone:

  • Enable Bluetooth on the phone. If it’s already enabled, toggle Bluetooth off and back on.
  • Ensure airplane mode is turned off.
  • Charge the phone. If the phone’s battery level is too low, it may not support Bluetooth functions.
  • Pair the device correctly. If it’s already paired, unpair and re-pair it.
  • Update the phone to the latest software from the manufacturer.
  • Ensure the car’s audio system is selected as the output source for sound.
  • Ensure phone settings allow Bluetooth (for example, mobile data is on, and the phone is connected to Wi-Fi).
  • Turn off the phone and turn it back on.
  • Ensure location permissions are set to “Always On” for the mobile app.

Troubleshooting Tesla's Mobile App

Check Tesla’s mobile app:

  • Ensure Tesla’s mobile app is updated to the latest software.
  • Verify you are logged into Tesla’s mobile app while using the phone key.
  • Ensure the Tesla app is running in the background.
  • Ensure you have fully configured the profile in the mobile app and set up the settings correctly.

Troubleshooting the Vehicle

The vehicle’s settings may affect its ability to pair with your mobile phone:

  • Charge Model X: If the vehicle’s battery level is too low, Bluetooth may not function.
  • Update the vehicle’s software and ensure it’s always up to date. Check for new software updates by navigating to Controls > Software
  • Restart the touchscreen. See Restarting the Touchscreen or Instrument Panel.
  • Restart the vehicle.

If Bluetooth still doesn’t work, disconnect both the vehicle AND the mobile phone. Then attempt to pair them again.

If you have issues with the BLE phone key, navigate to Controls > Locks while inside the vehicle and remove the phone from “Phone as Key.” Then reconfigure it. Only do this while inside the vehicle and with a reliable backup key (such as a key card) available.
