Check tire tread depth

To maintain safety, proper performance, and to determine if it is time for tire rotation (if applicable), it is important to measure the tread depth. Tires with tread depths less than 4/32 (3 mm) are more likely to hydroplane on wet surfaces and should be avoided. Tires with tread depths less than 5/32 (4 mm) do not perform well on snow and slush and should not be used in winter conditions.

To improve vehicle handling and reduce the risk of hydroplaning on wet surfaces, place the tires with the greatest tread depth on the front of the vehicle.

Use the table as a general guide when measuring the tread depth.

• > 5/32 inch Tires have adequate tread
• 3/32 inch - 4/32 inch: Replace or rotate tires soon. Tire performance may degrade in snowy or icy conditions
• < 2/32 inch: Replace tires

Using the tread depth gauge

Using a tread depth gauge, carefully measure the tires on the outside, center, and inside of each tread. Measure by inserting the extended tire wear indicator into one of the main grooves in the tread.
