Tesla implements autonomous flying drones at Giga Berlin
Tesla's quest to constantly improve the efficiency of its car production is well known. Recently, the focus has been on so-called 'gigacasting' technology, where large car components are produced in a single casting, a method that both Volvo and Toyota are now planning to adopt.
In pursuit of further efficiencies, Tesla has started using less technical tools at its German plant near Berlin. Specifically, two drones, called Pathfinder and Opportunity, have been introduced to navigate the warehouses. Their task is to scan and inventory the contents of the shelves.
Pathfinder, a flying drone, and Opportunity, which operates on the ground, are named after two NASA Mars probes. They are designed to autonomously navigate the factory and use their cameras to read and compare the inventory with the database data.
According to Tesla, these drones can scan up to 12,000 packages daily. Their use for inventory monitoring is a step towards fully automated factories.
