Volkswagen, one of the most prominent car brands, delivered 4.87 million vehicles in 2023. Although internal combustion engine vehicles still dominated sales, the statistics show a clear trend towards increasing popularity of electric cars. Deliveries of electric cars increased globally by an impressive 21% year-on-year, representing 394 000 units sold. Although electric models still made up a smaller share, they still accounted for just over 8 percent of Volkswagen's total sales.

Sweden stands out as one of the most significant markets for Volkswagen when it comes to electric cars, alongside countries such as Belgium, France, China, the UK, Germany and the US. Of course, not surprisingly, Norway is also a strong market. Unfortunately, detailed figures on sales of different models and markets are limited. In 2023, a total of 16,457 Volkswagen electric cars were registered in Sweden, with the majority, namely 11,007 copies, being the popular electric SUV ID.4.

It is also worth noting that deliveries of the ID.4 in 2023 increased significantly in Germany and the United States, with around 30,000 and 38,000 units sold respectively. The smaller ID.3 model saw an impressive increase in demand in China, with deliveries rising by as much as 200% compared to the previous year, reaching total sales of 75,000 units. This increase in sales demonstrates the ever-increasing popularity of electric cars in the global market.
