A comprehensive national commitment is crucial to ensure that every vehicle owner, regardless of housing type, has the opportunity to charge their electric car. In light of this insight, the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Transport Administration, on behalf of the Swedish government, have conducted an in-depth analysis to identify and address barriers to electrification of the transport sector.
Enabling home and depot charging for all types of accommodation is fundamental to the transition to an electrified vehicle fleet, according to the Swedish Transport Administration.
The report highlights the need for a national strategy to support the expansion of the charging infrastructure. This strategy aims to unite the efforts of government agencies, industry, municipalities, county councils and academic institutions.
The proposal includes the appointment of the Swedish Energy Agency as the national coordinator to accelerate electrification and strengthen the deployment of public charging facilities. It emphasizes that public charging infrastructure should be geographically distributed to cover the whole country, and that the state should be responsible for coordination and support in areas where the market cannot sustain the infrastructure on its own.
A crucial part of the strategy is to ensure that individual car owners are able to charge their vehicles at home, whether they live in their own house, condominium or rental property, and even if they do not have their own parking space. The government has already acted to facilitate charging in public spaces and also intends to remove barriers that currently limit the possibility of home charging within housing associations.
