Tesla or Polestar: A journey that rethinks the choice of electric cars
It all began in January when they started their journey with a car loaded with a heavy trailer and the temperature clocking in at seven degrees below zero. The journey seemed normal until they reached Jönköping, where blue lights in the rear view mirrors forced them to stop. The police stopped them and weighed the car and trailer, resulting in an excess weight of 105 kg. As a result, Jack and his father had to change cars and take a temporary borrowed car, a Polestar, which was provided with a fully charged battery.
From Jönköping to Gränna, the Polestar's battery proved to lose charge quickly. Every kilometer driven cost them one percent of the battery's capacity, and by the time they reached Linköping they had only 10% left. They tried to charge the car in the cold and spent 20 minutes trying to get the charge working. It then took another 50 minutes to get up to an acceptable level of 90%. By that time they had already spent several hours on the road, and it was 13:00, even though they had left Halmstad at seven in the morning. The journey became even more challenging when the battery was almost discharged when they were outside Norrköping, and they had to stop in Nyköping. Unfortunately, the charging stations there did not work, forcing them to continue to another station and leave the trailer at a McDonald's where they also encountered charging problems. After another 20 minutes of trouble, they were finally able to charge the car, but the time it took to recharge the battery was slow enough. After 12 hours on the road, they finally reached Stockholm, with only 30% battery capacity left. This was far from expected, considering that this Polestar should have had a range of 500 kilometers.
On the way home, in cold weather conditions and without a trailer, they had to stop twice to recharge the battery. This experience made Jack re-evaluate his views on electric cars, especially the Polestar. He realized that EVs can have a poorer range when it is cold outside, but he has not experienced the same problem with another EV owned by the Paulsson family.
When asked if he would consider owning an electric car in the future, Jack responded positively. He realized that electric cars are the future and the most sustainable option. But which electric car would he prefer? Jack emphasized the importance of choosing a well-known and reliable brand, such as Tesla.
It is important to note that despite the challenges that have sometimes been reported, Tesla continues to provide a reliable and efficient charging infrastructure in Sweden. Tesla's Supercharger network is well established and well maintained, many owners of Tesla cars have a positive experience of the available charging infrastructure.
When Tesla was mentioned as a possible choice, Jack expressed a strong positivity towards this brand. He agreed that Tesla has a unique advantage with its network of Supercharger stations that are not only easily accessible but also integrated into the car's system. On a Tesla car, Supercharger stations are displayed on the screen, showing which one is closest and easiest to reach. This is one of Tesla's many innovations that make owning an electric car convenient and worry-free. In addition, Tesla is known for its reliability and performance, which is a contributing factor to why Tesla, among others, has caught Jack's attention.
When asked to share his dream car in the electric car category, Jack mentioned two models: the Tesla Model S Plaid and the Mercedes EQS. These models represent for him the best in EV technology, performance and looks.
In conclusion, Jack's experience with Polestar provides an insight into the challenges of EVs in cold conditions and the long charging times. Despite this, he is open to owning an EV in the future and sees Tesla as one of the leading players in the market. Tesla's integrated Supercharger network and reliability are some of the factors that weigh heavily in choosing an EV as a sustainable and convenient transportation option.
