When the sidewalls start becoming the tread of the tire, that's bad! Due to the suspension geometry, the car doesn't gain very much camber when the vehicle is lowered, or in roll. Statically shortening the front upper control arm helps both to increase the camber gain with suspension travel, and obviously to increase static camber. Lap time improvements are in the order of seconds when stepping from roughly -1 degree of camber to -3+. We have a video coming soon that shows just how quickly a camber adjustment can be made (we're talking about less than one minute per side to make a change, the wheel doesn't even need to come off!). We have even prepared matching toe adjustments for various camber shim stacks. Say you want a street alignment with -1.5 degrees of camber, but want to turn it up to -3.4 degrees when you get to the track. No problem. Just take out the shims in the camber arm, turn the tie rod the exact number of turns specified in our instructions, and the toe will be within 1mm of where it was prior to the camber adjustment. The same goes for the performance brakes. They are great, but eventually, the fluid will boil as there just isn't enough rotor to take the heat away, even with our upgraded 2pc rotors. We also learned that the low-drag seals that help make the Model 3 so efficient lose their effectiveness after a few track days, as they are cooked and no longer seem to have the same kind of effectiveness as when they were new.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor this reason, we decided it was time to offer a motorsport big brake upgrade. We have been racing with StopTech calipers since 2008, using a relatively tiny ST-40 caliper that has seen everything from 3-hour endurance races to GTLM levels of downforce to contend with. We knew that StopTech would be an ideal partner for this upgrade. The STR-60 was the perfect caliper for the job. It ticks all the boxes: low-profile, made from a forged aluminum alloy, incredibly stiff (one of the stiffest calipers available), uses a standard pad shape, offers differential piston sizes, and uses silicone dust boots and anti-rattle clips - making the caliper suitable for daily driving. The caliper is hard anodized, which means it will put up with heat and abuse far better than a painted or powder-coated caliper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/664-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStopTech has done a really impressive job with the design of this caliper by using a bolt-in bridge system. \u003cstrong\u003eThe benefit is that the bridge offers a massive increase in caliper stiffness while being easily removed to quickly swap out pads.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThe bridge also contains anti-rattle clips that prevent the pads from making any noise. Caliper stiffness is extremely important - not just for confidence-inspiring brake feel, but also for the performance of the ABS system. Bosch Motorsport points out that the ABS can only work as well as the system can respond, and if a caliper is flexing, that will delay the time it takes for the ABS valves to apply and release the pad. So a stiff caliper results in a faster acting ABS, allowing it to stay ever close to the tire's optimal slip point. We actually noticed the lockup events seemed to occur at a higher frequency when comparing these brakes back to back to the OE calipers. This would match up with Bosch Motorsport's claims.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the caliper, we wanted to fit the largest rotor possible under an 18″ wheel. We knew that a 32mm wide rotor wasn't going to cut it, so we went for the big boy - 35mm. \u003cstrong\u003eThat is 10mm wider than the factory rotor! and that is where a huge amount of cooling comes from.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of brake setup you would find on a GT4 racecar, dare we even say a GT3 car. A forged billet aluminum machined caliper with a monstrous rotor, all that just fits under an 18″ wheel. You'll see that most 18″ wheel brake kits are only 355mm in diameter - but we were able to go all the way up to 368mm! The rotors are produced by the same rotor supplier that does all of our other kits (Girodisc), and they are known to produce some of the best rotors in the world. These discs last a LONG time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn November 2020 we also released a 380mm version for all of you that use 19″ and larger wheels. 380mm is a great choice if you want to fill in 20″ wheels for example. Well, the problem dear MPP friends is that the OEM E-Brake is integrated into the caliper, and with an electric car it's not like you can just leave it in gear when you park and ditch the e-brake!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne day we had this idea, noticing that the OEM Brembo Caliper has two halves that are bolted together - what if we make a new outer clamshell? We would be able to massively increase the width and cooling ability of the rotor! The OEM rotor vanes are quite narrow, so the amount of airflow for cooling is very limited. This would also allow us to kill two birds with one stone - in addition to the cooling upgrade, we would be able to design a pad retention system for aftermarket pads so they wouldn't rattle around in the factory outer clamshell. Massive performance benefit, no compromises, it fixes some ongoing annoying issues of using aftermarket brake pads, and the cost is far cheaper than a full caliper replacement. This kit also installs very easily - there is no requirement to remove brake lines, just unbolt the OE outer shell and install the MPP one, and swap the rotors and pads!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow the next question we're likely going to be asked - \"but isn't the single-piston caliper too small?\" Well - it's not the number of pistons that dictate when brakes overheat, it is primarily pad area, thickness, and rotor temperature. The only part of the system that actively removes heat is the rotor. So a wider rotor with the increased width in the air vanes means a huge increase in rotor cooling, which means cooler pads, which means a cooler caliper. Whether there is one piston behind that pad or three, it really makes no difference if the pad is the same size, and the Tesla rear pads are a pretty decent size. It was quite tricky to design a shape that looks like a traditional caliper considering that this is a sliding caliper design, but we went with what we always do - designed it for function rather than form, and integrated stiffening ribs that carry the load from the three anchor points to the pad surface area. Across those ribs, we tied in a landing for our MPP logo. We think it looks pretty tough. It also works. It is almost more important when using a street friendly brake pad to have a large rotor, as you want that rotor to run at the lowest possible temperature to keep from overheating the mild pad.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy moving from a single piece iron rotor to a two-piece aluminum hat and iron rotor ring, we were able to reduce the weight of the brakes, despite the massive increase in size! This kit reuses the OEM caliper, which is significant as the caliper has been designed to have very low brake drag, which plays an important role in the Model 3's outstanding energy efficiency. These rotors also have curved vanes - the internal air passages in the rotor. Every bushing that is replaced with a solid one moves towards that 100% direct, coupled to the road feeling, and that's why you'll find sealed solid spherical bearings, like the ones we are using, in European sports and supercars. These bushings are designed to give all of the benefits of a spherical bearing without any of the drawbacks - no noise, no clunks, and no premature wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese arms are the same length as factory. Adjustment in the trailing and traction arms is not necessary, and in our experience when a multi-link rear suspension has every link adjustable it's very common for problems to develop due to incorrect setup. In fact, the bolts totally backed themselves out on us during our Laguna Seca Time Attack event, and frankly we were lucky that the arm stayed on at all. The last half of the lap was completed with the bolts literally being held in place by the factory plastic undertray. By inserting an offset sleeve in the bearing, the spherical can either be nearly the OEM length (+1.5mm is the minimum setting), or it can be extended to 6.5mm longer than stock. This allows the user to fine-tune their caster on the car, as well as achieve a little bit more camber as well. The bearing is adjustable in the car, although it is challenging. We came up with a unique and well-rounded product to solve a lot of issues with the compression rod bushings that we're quite excited about! Let's first start with an explanation of what the compression rod does, and what the OEM compression rod bushing does - followed by how this product is a great solution for aggressively driven daily driving cars, where an increase in noises and harshness is not desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe compression rod is the arm in the front suspension on the Model 3 that controls the forward and rearward movement of the suspension. It's what holds the wheel in place when you hit large bumps, and what keeps the wheel from moving rearwards when you brake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe compression arm bolts to the rear of the wheel well, near the driver and passenger's feet. As a result, this bushing isolates the majority of the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) from the front suspension when hitting road imperfections such as potholes, cracks in the road, and broken edges of asphalt. Tesla has designed their bushing with large voids to reduce the NVH as much as possible, but this also creates a very \"soft\" bushing that has a LOT of travel during aggressive braking specifically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/38-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the compression rod bushing deflects under high load, the result is a change in toe as the entire lower suspension moves rearwards. This causes significant darting and shaking of the steering wheel, especially when the ABS is activated or when only one wheel hits a bump, resulting in an unbalanced amount of distortion in the left and right bushings - causing a different amount of toe change from one side to the other, steering the car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe looked closely at the OEM bushing and determined that if we shaped a sleeve in the correct way, we would be able to retain the required articulation of the OEM bushing while significantly filling the void and thus drastically reducing the bushing deflection. We've been testing these inserts for a few months on a number of different cars and so far the results are very promising. While our Front Lower Control Arm Bushings were a 70% improvement in the darting and shaking during braking, these inserts filled in that last 30% and the result is a very confidence-inspiring front-end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you just enjoy driving around town and having a responsive, fun feeling car - but you don't brake at the limit of ABS or go to the track, then these inserts are really not required. The front lower control arm bushing is what you want - as that reduces the compliance in the lateral direction which is what you feel the most.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis insert is of most value to those of you who daily drive your car and still appreciate a quiet and smooth ride, but want to eliminate that unpredictability under heavy braking when on track or when pushing hard in the mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor those of you wondering about a solid bearing solution: In 2010 we developed a full spherical bearing for our Nissan 350z racecar, and that bearing continues to be in Kels to this day - 11 years later! MPP.R will release a similar design (in fact that 350z bearing can almost pop right into the Model 3), for those of you that are hard-core track focused drivers that aren't concerned with NVH.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eThe Inserts:\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe designed these inserts for the most ideal shape possible, and they are CNC machined using a 5-axis to the exact shape. We've machined grooves into the part to add grip to the rubber bushing, as well as a specific shape to prevent the bushing from pushing out the insert. As with more MPP parts they are anodized in blue. In hindsight, the design is likely a bit too obsessive, requiring a lot of surfacing and machining time with a very small endmill. In the future, we may redesign the part to reduce the excessive machining time and to reduce the cost. However, considering the performance benefit these little inserts offer, the value is quite high - especially considering how easy they are to install compared to a pressed bushing replacement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eThe Data:\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe tested the OEM bushing on a press with and without our inserts and measured the deflection. As expected, the OEM bushing's rate is extremely low until the void \"blocks\".
