With this in mind, we ensured the plate sits flush with both the front bumper at the front and the battery case in the back so that drag is not impacted in any way. Originally we had planned not to develop an arm to replace the OE front upper, simply because of how impressed we were by the stock arm. The factory arm is a lightweight, stiff, and thin part with a ton of compression travel before chassis interference. We thought it would be possible to achieve acceptable camber adjustment elsewhere, but that proved to not be the case.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you'll know if you've been around in the community for some time, our arms were the first ones to match Tesla's range of travel, and the first ones to use OEM ball joints and sealed OEM spherical bearings. They were also the first to use a drop in ship design, allowing for camber changes in as little as one minute - without removing a wheel!! Since that time some other companies have copied significant aspects of our designs and claimed them to be \"innovation\", which is unfortunate. If you have questions about why we believe our arms are better designed and superior in function, please don't hesitate to send an email and ask. Our parts are not \"cheaper\" because they are worse, they are less costly because we've committed to having the smallest margins possible to give our end customers the BEST products for their hard-earned dollar. We're proud to announce that with the purchase of a 5-axis CNC we've now been able to lower the cost of our FUCAs even further!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 3 and Model Y have a serious lack of front camber - and any of you that have taken your car to the track know that from the tire wear. When the sidewalls start becoming the tread of the tire, that's bad! Due to the suspension geometry, the car doesn't gain very much camber when the vehicle is lowered, or in roll. Statically shortening the front upper control arm helps both to increase the camber gain with suspension travel, and obviously to increase static camber. Lap time improvements are in the order of seconds when stepping from roughly -1 degree of camber to -3+. This is no small change!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/530-image.jpeg\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn designing this arm we had our work cut out for us, but what you see here is a suspension arm with pure motorsport DNA, that is designed to have zero compromises on the street. While it would have been easy to put some open spherical bearings on the inboard end, we opted to keep OEM sealed bearings and ball joints throughout to ensure that these arms would endure the test of time, and not leave your silent Model 3 squeaking and creaking over every bump a few years down the road. These OE sealed spherical bearings and ball joints come from high-end European cars, and these joints are designed to last for tens if not hundreds of thousands of miles without degradation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/671-image.jpeg\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe camber adjustment mechanism uses shims - basically making camber settings infinitely repeatable. This is a huge advantage as it offers the end-user or the alignment shop the ability to drop in shims for a \"track\" alignment and then set it back to stock in a matter of minutes. We have a video coming soon that shows just how quickly a camber adjustment can be made (we're talking about less than one minute per side to make a change, the wheel doesn't even need to come off!). We have even prepared matching toe adjustments for various camber shim stacks. Say you want a street alignment with -1.5 degrees of camber, but want to turn it up to -3.4 degrees when you get to the track. No problem. Just take out the shims in the camber arm, turn the tie rod the exact number of turns specified in our instructions, and the toe will be within 1mm of where it was prior to the camber adjustment. When it's time to go home, simply pop the shims back in and set the tie rods back.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe're talking about a few minutes per side to do this!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/361-image.jpeg\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\"\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe arm has been sculpted for maximum clearance in vertical travel, and we were able to get the same amount of upwards travel as the OEM arm - an impressive feat considering we also had to add in a camber adjustment mechanism at the outer part of the arm. \u003cstrong\u003eAs an update in Late 2020, we've updated our design to be side to side specific to allow for additional travel clearance for the Tesla Model Y. We are able to do this WITH A PRICE DECREASE due to the investment in 5-axis machining. The finish of all of our products has also improved with the use of 5-axis machining. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile there will surely be some cheaper (and sometimes more expensive!) options available in the future, we are confident none will be as easy to adjust as ours or be as quiet and smooth on the street. We know how important it is for suspension arms to be easy to adjust, have great durability even in harsh climates, and have solid bearings rather than rubber bushings for the ultimate connection to the road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost aftermarket suspension arms are made using either urethane bushings, which are used because they are cheap – or spherical rod ends, which are ideal for performance but don’t last very long in sandy or salty environments. Our solution is to use an OEM production sealed bearing – \u003cstrong\u003edelivering the performance of a spherical and the durability of an OE part\u003c\/strong\u003e. Our solution is to use an offset thread turnbuckle allowing for precise adjustment. Rather than use jam-nuts – which always affect the alignment when locking down the nuts –\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eour clamping system allows the alignment technician to perfectly set the alignment\u003c\/strong\u003e, then tighten the clamp bolts without throwing off the camber. The same goes for the performance brakes. They are great, but eventually, the fluid will boil as there just isn’t enough rotor to take the heat away, even with our upgraded 2pc rotors. We also learned that the low-drag seals that help make the Model 3 so efficient lose their effectiveness after a few track days, as they are cooked and no longer seem to have the same kind of effectiveness as when they were new.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor this reason, we decided it was time to offer a motorsport big brake upgrade. We have been racing with StopTech calipers since 2008, using a relatively tiny ST-40 caliper that has seen everything from 3-hour endurance races to GTLM levels of downforce to contend with. We knew that StopTech would be an ideal partner for this upgrade. The STR-60 was the perfect caliper for the job. It ticks all the boxes: low-profile, made from a forged aluminum alloy, incredibly stiff (one of the stiffest calipers available), uses a standard pad shape, offers differential piston sizes, and uses silicone dust boots and anti-rattle clips – making the caliper suitable for daily driving. The caliper is hard anodized, which means it will put up with heat and abuse far better than a painted or powder-coated caliper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/664-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStopTech has done a really impressive job with the design of this caliper by using a bolt-in bridge system. \u003cstrong\u003eThe benefit is that the bridge offers a massive increase in caliper stiffness while being easily removed to quickly swap out pads.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThe bridge also contains anti-rattle clips that prevent the pads from making any noise. Caliper stiffness is extremely important – not just for confidence-inspiring brake feel, but also for the performance of the ABS system. Bosch Motorsport points out that the ABS can only work as well as the system can respond, and if a caliper is flexing, that will delay the time it takes for the ABS valves to apply and release the pad. So a stiff caliper results in a faster acting ABS, allowing it to stay ever close to the tire’s optimal slip point. We actually noticed the lockup events seemed to occur at a higher frequency when comparing these brakes back to back to the OE calipers. This would match up with Bosch Motorsport’s claims.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the caliper, we wanted to fit the largest rotor possible under an 18″ wheel.  We knew that a 32mm wide rotor wasn’t going to cut it, so we went for the big boy – 35mm. \u003cstrong\u003eThat is 10mm wider than the factory rotor! and that is where a huge amount of cooling comes from.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of brake setup you would find on a GT4 racecar, dare we even say a GT3 car. A forged billet aluminum machined caliper with a monstrous rotor, all that just fits under an 18″ wheel. You’ll see that most 18″ wheel brake kits are only 355mm in diameter – but we were able to go all the way up to 368mm! The rotors are produced by the same rotor supplier that does all of our other kits (Girodisc), and they are known to produce some of the best rotors in the world. These discs last a LONG time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn November 2020 we also released a 380mm version for all of you that use 19″ and larger wheels. 380mm is a great choice if you want to fill in 20″ wheels for example. There is not going to be a noticeable performance benefit from the 368 to 380 – it’s mostly for looks!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/594-image.png\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy using such a large rotor, we are also able to give you a wide range of pad options. Since the caliper uses a large pad, paired with a rotor that can dissipate a mega amount of heat, it is possible for most to use a modest sport brake pad compound and potentially not have to worry about changing pads at the track versus on the street. The recommended sport compound pad is included with the kit. This will be suitable for most, however, for those that are driving performance Model 3’s at the absolute limit on brake intensive tracks, full racing pads will be required.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe silicone dust boots included are rated to handle much higher temperatures than rubber dust boots, and we were pleased to see that after two track days, one with significant long-running, the dust boots look brand new. \u003cstrong\u003eWhile there a few big brake kits on the market, it’s worth asking – how many companies that develop big brake kits have actually put thousands of miles on their kits, and track tested them repeatedly before offering them for sale?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eWe’re not interested in just fitting the biggest rotor we can and making it look pretty! It’s only gotten worse since we’ve released the MPP.R StopTech 368mm BBK. Well, the problem dear MPP friends is that the OEM E-Brake is integrated into the caliper, and with an electric car it’s not like you can just leave it in gear when you park and ditch the e-brake!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne day we had this idea, noticing that the OEM Brembo Caliper has two halves that are bolted together – what if we make a new outer clamshell? We would be able to massively increase the width and cooling ability of the rotor! The OEM rotor vanes are quite narrow, so the amount of airflow for cooling is very limited. This would also allow us to kill two birds with one stone – in addition to the cooling upgrade, we would be able to design a pad retention system for aftermarket pads so they wouldn’t rattle around in the factory outer clamshell. Needless to say, the OEM E-brake is retained since it is housed on the inboard end of the caliper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/958-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis has been sitting on my desk since around April 2020 and frankly, I don’t know why we haven’t made more time to get it to production. We’re sorry. This is one of the products we are most excited about in 2020, it’s such a unique way to solve a rather difficult problem – it ticks all of the boxes. Massive performance benefit, no compromises, it fixes some ongoing annoying issues of using aftermarket brake pads, and the cost is far cheaper than a full caliper replacement. This kit also installs very easily – there is no requirement to remove brake lines, just unbolt the OE outer shell and install the MPP one, and swap the rotors and pads!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow the next question we’re likely going to be asked – “but isn’t the single-piston caliper too small?” Well – it’s not the number of pistons that dictate when brakes overheat, it is primarily pad area, thickness, and rotor temperature. The only part of the system that actively removes heat is the rotor. So a wider rotor with the increased width in the air vanes means a huge increase in rotor cooling, which means cooler pads, which means a cooler caliper. Whether there is one piston behind that pad or three, it really makes no difference if the pad is the same size, and the Tesla rear pads are a pretty decent size. They are almost twice the size of the brakes we run on our 800 horsepower hybrid racecar, so that’s saying something.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow we’ve talked about function, but we have to give the looks of this billet part some attention. The sharp lines and MPP logo really show you that this caliper means business.  It was quite tricky to design a shape that looks like a traditional caliper considering that this is a sliding caliper design, but we went with what we always do – designed it for function rather than form, and integrated stiffening ribs that carry the load from the three anchor points to the pad surface area. Across those ribs, we tied in a landing for our MPP logo. We think it looks pretty tough. It also works. The brake rotor is the only component in the system that is able to control the rate of heat rejection – the brake pads and brake fluid only dictate the temperature at which the system can function before breaking down, but without increased heat rejection the system simply cannot manage the massive power of these cars! Fade is inevitable when driving aggressively on the track, especially low-speed tracks with a lot of short acceleration zones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur rotors take a massive step forward to improving the braking system of the vehicle. When combined with track pads and racing brake fluid, the brake system is able to handle some serious track duty. This BBK upgrades the rotor size from the OE’s tiny 320mm to 365mm, and the thickness goes up from 25mm to 26mm – a MASSIVE difference in rotor size! \u003cstrong\u003eAs a result the thermal ceiling, even on stock brake pads goes up massively.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we all know the Model 3 struggles with braking performance – the main source of the problem being overheating the front pads. Larger rotors are able to dissipate much more heat, and that is why large rotors are found on just about every sports car in the world. No matter what kind of brake pad you put on –\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eyou still need a way to shed heat\u003c\/em\u003e. It is almost more important when using a street friendly brake pad to have a large rotor, as you want that rotor to run at the lowest possible temperature to keep from overheating the mild pad.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy moving from a single piece iron rotor to a two-piece aluminum hat and iron rotor ring, we were able to reduce the weight of the brakes, despite the massive increase in size! This kit reuses the OEM caliper, which is significant as the caliper has been designed to have very low brake drag, which plays an important roll in the Model 3’s outstanding energy efficiency. These rotors also have curved vanes – the internal air passages in the rotor. Because the vanes are curved they act as an air pump and dramatically increase the airflow and cooling of the disc at speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe performed a test using our \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassperformance.com\/product\/mpp-motec-c125-display-for-model-3\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eMoTeC C125\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edash logger and some IZZE CAN-Based IR Brake Temperature sensors to prove the massive difference that this brake kit provides over the factory rotors. See below – almost a 100C difference in rotor temperature. It solves the problems of at the track brake overheating, without the compromise of big brake kit costs or inefficiency on the road. And even for cars that don’t hit the track – as we saw with our spirited driving, the OEM pads are designed to be environmentally friendly and as a result, have a very low maximum temperature before they fade. Every bushing that is replaced with a solid one moves towards that 100% direct, coupled to the road feeling, and that’s why you’ll find sealed solid spherical bearings, like the ones we are using, in European sports and supercars. These bushings are designed to give all of the benefits of a spherical bearing without any of the drawbacks – no noise, no clunks, and no premature wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese arms are the same length as factory. This results in a less than direct feeling through the steering wheel, and a wallowing or wiggle as the car “takes a set” upon entering a corner. But it gets worse. As the outside wheel and tire carry most of the cornering load, this outside bushing deflects more than the inside bushing. This results in a change of toe and camber in the front suspension, which\u003cstrong\u003ereduces total front grip.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat’s not even the worst part! The OE Tesla lower control arm has a known tendency to come loose after aggressive track driving with high grip tires. In fact, the bolts totally backed themselves out on us during our Laguna Seca Time Attack event, and frankly we were lucky that the arm stayed on at all. The last half of the lap was completed with the bolts literally being held in place by the factory plastic undertray. This happened despite torquing the bolts higher than the factory spec and having checked them on the first day of the event. Rather than permanently having a large offset bearing, which would force users to have significant additional caster and potential tire rubbing issues at the front fender, we found a way to make the length adjustable. By inserting an offset sleeve in the bearing, the spherical can either be nearly the OEM length (+1.5mm is the minimum setting), or it can be extended to 6.5mm longer than stock. This allows the user to fine-tune their caster on the car, as well as achieve a little bit more camber as well. The bearing is adjustable in the car, although it is challenging. You’ll likely want to select the position at installation time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinding a sealed spherical joint that can articulate over the entire vertical range of the Model 3’s suspension was difficult, and we had actually given up for over a year on this product – but finally, we were able to find a bearing that would work and we’re very excited to release this product for all of you that are hardcore about track duty with your Model 3’s! \u003cstrong\u003eNote: this bearing is a new design and the long-term durability has not yet been evaluated. We came up with a unique and well-rounded product to solve a lot of issues with the compression rod bushings that we’re quite excited about! Let’s first start with an explanation of what the compression rod does, and what the OEM compression rod bushing does – followed by how this product is a great solution for aggressively driven daily driving cars, where an increase in noises and harshness is not desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe compression rod is the arm in the front suspension on the Model 3 that controls the forward and rearward movement of the suspension. It’s what holds the wheel in place when you hit large bumps, and what keeps the wheel from moving rearwards when you brake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe compression arm bolts to the rear of the wheel well, near the driver and passenger’s feet. As a result, this bushing isolates the majority of the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) from the front suspension when hitting road imperfections such as potholes, cracks in the road, and broken edges of asphalt. Tesla has designed their bushing with large voids to reduce the NVH as much as possible, but this also creates a very “soft” bushing that has a LOT of travel during aggressive braking specifically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/38-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the compression rod bushing deflects under high load, the result is a change in toe as the entire lower suspension moves rearwards. This causes significant darting and shaking of the steering wheel, especially when the ABS is activated or when only one wheel hits a bump, resulting in an unbalanced amount of distortion in the left and right bushings – causing a different amount of toe change from one side to the other, steering the car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe looked closely at the OEM bushing and determined that if we shaped a sleeve in the correct way, we would be able to retain the required articulation of the OEM bushing while significantly filling the void and thus drastically reducing the bushing deflection. We’ve been testing these inserts for a few months on a number of different cars and so far the results are very promising. While our Front Lower Control Arm Bushings were an 70% improvement in the darting and shaking during braking, these inserts filled in that last 30% and the result is a very confidence-inspiring front-end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you just enjoy driving around town and having a responsive, fun feeling car – but you don’t brake at the limit of ABS or go to the track, then these inserts are really not required. The front lower control arm bushing is what you want – as that reduces the compliance in the lateral direction which is what you feel the most.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis insert is of most value to those of you who daily drive your car and still appreciate a quiet and smooth ride, but want to eliminate that unpredictability under heavy braking when on track or when pushing hard in the mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor those of you wondering about a solid bearing solution: In 2010 we developed a full spherical bearing for our Nissan 350z racecar, and that bearing continues to be in Kels to this day – 11 years later! MPP.R will release a similar design (in fact that 350z bearing can almost pop right into the Model 3), for those of you that are hard-core track focused drivers that aren’t concerned with NVH.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eThe Inserts:\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe designed these inserts for the most ideal shape possible, and they are CNC machined using a 5-axis to the exact shape. We’ve machined grooves into the part to add grip to the rubber bushing, as well as a specific shape to prevent the bushing from pushing out the insert. As with more MPP parts they are anodized in blue. In hindsight, the design is likely a bit too obsessive, requiring a lot of surfacing and machining time with a very small endmill. In the future, we may redesign the part to reduce the excessive machining time and to reduce the cost. However, considering the performance benefit these little inserts offer, the value is quite high – especially considering how easy they are to install compared to a pressed bushing replacement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eThe Data:\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe tested the OEM bushing on a press with and without our inserts and measured the deflection. As expected, the OEM bushing’s rate is extremely low until the void “blocks”. While we do not have the correlation of what 4mm of rearward hub movement works out to in terms of toe change on hand, I can tell you with confidence that 4mm of movement in a suspension system is a MASSIVE amount, and that’s why you’re feeling such violent actions in the front of the car when braking at the limit, especially if your alignment has toe-out to begin with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg class=\"fr-fil fr-dib fr-draggable\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com\/storage.quickbutik.com\/stores\/9126O\/files\/749-34-image.jpeg\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe data shows that the 500-2000lb range is where our inserts make the biggest difference – beyond that the void has fully crushed and the rates are fairly similar.
